There are two main types of these birds: diving and dabbling. Diving or sea species forage deep underwater, so they have to be rather heavy and therefore have more difficulty taking off. Dabbling species find food on the surface of water or on land. They are not able to dive deep, but can reach for food at the depth of the neck. These birds have tiny plates along the inside of the beak to filter water out of the side of their beaks and keep food inside. A few species of these birds are able to catch large fish; others feed on plants, worms, mollusks and insects.

In the wild, these creatures can be found in wetlands, marshes, ponds, rivers, lakes and oceans. These animals can’t live without water. They have webbed feet designed specially for swimming; they act like paddles for these birds. Ducks of the Pekin species are the most widely spread domestic breeds. Their feathers are white or cream colored; their bills are orange colored. They do not fly, are excellent for captivity and for egg and meat production.
