Wood Duck

The wood duck can be seen in a wild bird aviary and in most duck photos. These aquatic birds are abundant in the Northern Hemisphere. They prefer shallow fresh or brackish water and avoid fast-moving water. The main food of this species is various seeds, roots, stems, leaves and flowers of aquatic vegetation, mollusks and aquatic insects. Most birds of this species are tolerant of humans and can be approached closely. These birds migrate in small groups. They are very vocal, especially during the breeding season. Humans exploit these birds extensively. They are hunted for sport and for subsistence. Large flocks can damage agricultural crops. There are many mammalian and avian predators of these birds. The males differ greatly from females that helps the males to attract the female when breeding. The males mate by ruffling their bright feathers. The pairs usually do not stay together for long. There are nine to thirteen eggs that are laid at daily intervals. When the clutch is complete, incubation period begins. It lasts for 27 to 28 days. The ducklings all hatch within 24 hours, mostly during the day; and when they are hatched they are led to water. The wood duck can be seen in a wild bird aviary and in most duck photos.
